The Brief
Four layers of old roofing, one on top of the other
This flat roof had been covered, recovered and covered again over the years until four separate layers of weathered material sat on top of one another. It had definitely seen better days. Rather than add a fifth layer, the brief was to take the roof back to the structure and rebuild it properly, so the finished roof would look good and last for decades instead of years.
The Work
Back to the rafters and rebuilt from scratch
The team carried out a full strip back of all four layers of old roofing material, right down to the original rafters, so the rebuild started from a perfectly clean and solid foundation. From there the roof was built back up in stages. Brand new high efficiency insulation was installed first, to keep the property warm in the winter and cool in the summer. A durable, solid new OSB deck was then laid over the insulation for maximum strength and a flat, stable base. The roof was finished with a top of the line Firestone rubber EPDM membrane, providing seamless, ultra durable, weather resistant protection across the whole surface.
The Outcome
A modern roof with a 50 year plus life expectancy
The property went from a leaking, multi layered headache to a modern, completely watertight and low maintenance finish. Because the roof was rebuilt rather than recovered, every element from the insulation up is new and specified to work together, and the Firestone EPDM membrane carries a 50 year plus life expectancy. The thermal upgrade is felt inside the building as well as on the roof, with the new insulation layer making the space below more comfortable year round rather than simply drier. It is quality workmanship that speaks for itself, and a roof that should not need thinking about again for a very long time. JMR Roofing offers free, no obligation quotes on flat roof replacements across Nottingham, Derby and the surrounding areas.
